To everyone that reads this post, I say welcome. If we’ve crossed paths, have never met before or are lifelong friends, my goal with this blog is to share with you who I am, what I do and why do it. The who is me and my passion for helping others. The what is writing – sharing stories and helping others engage their audience and grow their business. The why, because I want to make a difference through the written word.
So, where did it all start? It was kind of by chance honestly. I made the decision the day that I turned 30 that I didn’t want to work for other people anymore. After six years as a Golf Professional and three years as Mortgage Banker, I realized that I was missing something. That something was a combination of happiness, freedom and passion.
My girlfriend, Gillian Rowley, read some of my writing, thought it spoke to people and convinced me to pursue it fulltime. As the owner of Get Global Marketing, Gillian has seen her share of writers come and go. Even though she might have been a little bias and smitten with me, she assured me I had a gift for the written word and telling a story.
So, what came next? I had some raw skills but not much else. It was time to learn what it takes to become a professional writer and run a business. To start, I read everything I could about what great writers do to set themselves apart. The likes of Brian Clark, Joe Pulizzi and Robert Bly were quickly devoured. Next, I had to find clients and convince them they should hire me as a writer. Even though it was difficult at first, it didn’t take long for me to realize that I had to find ways I could help people, not sell them on the skills I’d developed.
Helping people. That’s the philosophy that’s continued to govern how I approach writing for a living. Not only has it positively impacted my business, it’s at the core of who I am. At the time of this writing, I can say that I love what I do and why I do it for that reason above all else. That’s pretty cool.
